Comments:  On this beautiful Saturday morning in Falcon, Colorado prior to the 4th of July, the anniversary of our nation's birth, what could be more appropriate than to review an all American Cigar from an all American manufacturer, John Hay Cigars. As a general rule, I don't expect a lot from American made cigars, particularly those made of all American tobaccos. This cigar is not what I expected... I am impressed! (Is that a patriotic ditty I hear in the background?) Upon removing the cellophane I was presented with an evenly colored wrapper having a nice oily sheen and a velvety feel to it and an overall pleasant though somewhat rugged appearance and a very nice earthy bouquet. My only complaint appearance-wise was that the wrapper which was actually very finely veined for the most part, had a rather large vein running the length of the back of the cigar. I found this to be a distraction from what was otherwise a handsome stick. As I found later, this also proved to contribute to a moderately uneven burn requiring a couple of corrective burns. The cap, which was roughly applied, was of no concern as I was going to cut that off anyway. Lighting the cigar revealed a draw that was a little on the tight side but not so much as to prevent the delivery of adequate volumes of smoke. A third of the way into the stick, the draw improved dramatically and maintained to the end so as to be fully to my satisfaction. The ash produced was of a medium gray color and held firm to an inch and a half before falling of its own accord. The aroma of this smoke was agreeable and mild, meeting with my wife's approval... of course that's not to say that anything less than her full approval would have affected the enjoyment of my cigar. (I hope she doesn't read this.) But of course we all know that what really counts is how the cigar tastes... and that is where the real surprise is! The John Hay Pennsylvania Maduro started with a mild-to-medium bodied flavor of leather and sweet cream with hints of grass and spice, building to a fuller bodied finish of leather and spice while retaining a less pronounced sweetness at less than an inch of the cigar left. I don't normally have a lot to say about burn time, but in this case I thought it noteworthy that I enjoyed a full hour and forty five minutes with this smoke, a long cool burn unusual in a cigar of this size. I have to say that I found the flavor profile of this cigar to be a little different from what I expected of a maduro, but I thoroughly enjoyed it none-the-less. I know a lot of us have a tendency to turn our noses up at American, machine-made products, in many cases without even trying them. But, in this case, I believe that by not giving this cigar a fair shake, you are missing out on a real treat. Also, if you are, as I am, always on the lookout for an affordable everyday smoke then you can't pass on this one. I think I may have found a new everyday smoke for myself in the John Hay Pennsylvania Maduro. Thumbs up to the folks at John Hay!

This is the first in a series of reviews on John Hay products, the next coming on the 4th of July (or maybe sooner)! So come back and see us. Check out John Hay Cigars web site too, these folks look like they're having far too much fun!
