Comments: While this is a decent cigar, I expected more than what I got. The John Hay Ambassador Maduro's wrapper had a nice oily gloss to it, was finely veined and evenly colored but was marred by a rather large hole (1/4 inch) in the wrapper near the foot (does not show in the above image). The sticks construction was firm and even, though moderately lumpy. It's firmness hinted at a draw on the tighter side, but surprisingly was a little too easy causing the cigar to burn a little on the hot side if I wasn't careful. The ash produced was a mottled gray with a yellow tinge to it and though it was a bit flaky, it held firm to an inch plus. The burn wandered from side to side but was not a problem. The flavor of this stick was a little disappointing, having a simple profile with a full-body of heavily peppered cedar being the best way I can describe it. Oddly enough, I could compare the flavor to some of the Cuban products I've smoked, but lacking the complexity of Cuban tobaccos. I actually liked the John Hay Pennsylvania Maduro better than this smoke... and I'm almost hesitant to interject that here as they are two very different cigars and probably shouldn't be compared. Let me know what you think...

History: (From Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars, 2006) Long a machine-made brand, the hand-made John Hay Ambassador was introduced in 2005. It's medium-to-full body in the Connecticut-Shade wrapped version (with a Connecticut binder) and full-bodied with a Dominican-grown maduro wrapper (and Dominican binder). Handmade in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
