If you’re smoking a Cohiba you bought in the U.S., you’re not smoking Cuban.
You probably know that it’s illegal to sell Cuban cigars in the United States because of trade embargoes. But you can still buy a Cohiba, a smooth cigar known as one of the finest in Cuba. What’s the deal?
General Cigar Co. has the trademark for Cohiba cigars in the U.S., but they make their cigars with Dominican leaves, not Cuban ones. Cuban cigar company Cubatabaco has just lost another court battle to get this trademark, because of the U.S. embargo.
If you want a real Cuban Cohiba, you’ll have to get it illegally. Cubatabaco is going to try to get a license to register the trademark here, to fight what it calls confusion by General Cigar Co.
In the meantime, here’s how you can tell a Cuban Cohiba from a Dominican Cohiba:
Cuban Cohiba:
