Comments: This maduro wrapped beauty is everything I would have expected from Arturo Fuente. Its toothy, oily wrapper, is rugged in appearance and yet beautiful to behold. The cigar was very well constructed, having a perfect draw and an even burn, giving up luxurious volumes of smoke. The full-bodied flavor was of a lightly spiced, woody espresso... which was consistent to the very end, finishing with a flair. As a nice extra bit of luxury, it came attractively wrapped in its own cedar sleeve. I spent a hour and a half with this smoke and enjoyed every minute of it.
History: (From Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars, 2006) Arturo Fuente learned the art of growing and processing tobacco and the making of premium, handmade cigars in Cuba at the end of the 19th century, producing his own line in 1912. Today, his son Carlos and grandson, Carlos Jr. oversee the more than 500 rollers who manufacture more than 24 million cigars every year. Their line offers a medium-to-full-bodied taste, with the celebrated Hemmingway series a little mellower, thanks to an additional 140 days of aging. Many of the natural-wrapped cigars (including the Hemmingway series) feature Cameroon leaves, with Connecticut leaves used for maduros.
The Cuban Belicoso, Chateau Fuente, Chateau Fuente Royal Salute and Double Chateau Fuente use either Ecuadorian Sun-grown, Connecticut-seed or Connecticut wrappers. In the sun-grown Ecuadorian version, these four shapes (plus the 8-5-8) make up a subset of the line: the Fuente Sun Grown Series. The Fuente Seleccion d'Oro features a Connecticut Shade wrapper in place of Cameroon. Handmade in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
